History of Barbour International

In 1894, John Barbour began trading in the burgeoning port of South Shields, supplying oilskins and other garments to sailors, fishermen and dockers. In 1908 Barbour introduced its first oilskin suit for motorcycling and the love affair with biking began. Take a ride through our timeline below and discover the Barbour International story.

Barbour's inaugural catalogue includes an oilskin suit suitable for

motor cycling as “they are impregnable by wind or wet.”
