@NikolajThaning

Occupation: Photography Student
Location: Valby, Copenhagen

It’s the juxtaposition of stasis and change that inspires Nikolaj the most – ever-changing nature versus solid symmetry.
Nikolaj has travelled extensively around the world, but it’s his native city that he photographs the most. He walks and cycles through Copenhagen every day, looking for new places and capturing their beauty.

Meet Nikolaj Thaning Rentzmann

Why does this particular place inspire you?

I love the mix of nature and symmetry. The nature changes all the time, while the symmetry stays the same all year round.

Do you usually travel to inspire your work, or your hobbies (either long trips or walks in your neighbourhood)?

Both. Over the last three years I’ve visited India, Israel, England, Palestine, Spain, the United States and other places. But the majority of my photos are taken in Copenhagen, where I live. I bike around the city a lot, taking pictures of whatever catches my eye.

What have you learnt from travelling?

The diversity of life and nature. How people live in other parts of the world, and how fortunate I am to live in a well-organised, homogenous society. However, I have found more exciting challenges in foreign cultures and landscapes.

What is a day in your life like?

I study Photographic Communication at the Danish School of Media and Journalism - that takes up most of my day! As I mentioned, I walk and bike a lot around the city, in order to find inspiration and different beautiful spots.

What do you love about Instagram?

It’s easy to use, and a great place to share pictures and get inspired by skilled photographers from all over the world. I spend a lot of time scrolling through different feeds, seeing who other people follow and learning from their comments. It’s also a great place to meet new people - I’ve made a lot of new friends through Instagram.

Video on Instagram has such big potential. Have you enjoyed shooting this mini-movie?

I enjoyed it a lot. I was lucky enough to know the director beforehand. It made communicating about the work much easier, and it was less awkward to be in front of the lens instead of behind it.

Where else in the world do you dream of exploring?

I would love to see both Iceland and Greenland. The landscapes are so extraordinary - beautiful and wild. It’s so different from what you’ll find elsewhere. I’d also like to go back to North America to explore other parts of the continent.
